The one thing you have to bring

The game files you need

This project is the engine, not the game. The art, the sound and the maps belong to the people who made Heroes of Might and Magic II, so you supply those yourself — from a copy you own, or from the demo, which is free. In practice it is one file.

In practice

One file, about 40 MB

The only file a battle or a campaign cannot do without is HEROES2.AGG, which lives in the DATA folder of any Heroes II installation. When the browser version asks you to pick a folder, pick the one that contains DATA — not DATA itself.

📁

DATA

Required. Holds HEROES2.AGG: every sprite, sound and interface element the game draws. About 40 MB.

🗺️

MAPS

Optional. Copied if it is there. The battle campaigns build their own battlefields, so they never need it; the adventure map in the native build does.

🎵

MUSIC

Optional, and large. Copied if it is there. Without it you still get music: the engine plays the tracks inside the AGG through its own bundled soundfont.

The expansion is not needed.

The Price of Loyalty adds no creatures or heroes the campaigns use, so HEROES2X.AGG is optional everywhere in this mod. If it is in the folder it is picked up; if it is not, nothing is missing.

Where to get it

Two ways, one of them free

🎮

The free demo

The 1996 demo is freely distributed, and its DATA folder has a full HEROES2.AGG in it — enough for every battle and every campaign here.

  • Download h2demo.zip — about 22 MB, from the Internet Archive
  • Unzip it anywhere
  • Give the game the unzipped folder — it already has DATA and MAPS inside it
💿

Your own copy

If you own the game — disc, GOG or Ubisoft — point the engine at the folder you installed it into and everything is there, expansion included.

The native download can fetch the demo data for you on first launch, in one click. The browser version cannot — a page is not allowed to reach out and grab a file from somewhere else on your behalf — so there you download and unzip it yourself, once.

What happens to it

The files stay where they are

  1. Nothing is uploaded. The browser reads the folder you pick and copies it into its own private storage for this site. It never goes over the network, to us or to anyone else.
  2. It is remembered. Picking the folder is a one-time step per browser. Clearing this site's data undoes it, and you would pick the folder again.
  3. Only the host, online. In an online battle the guest supplies nothing at all — they are watching the host's game and playing their own side over it.
  4. We host none of it. Not on this site, not inside the browser build, not inside the downloads. That is not a technical choice; it is not ours to distribute.
